Israel Day 3

June 9, 2009

Once again the wake up call came entirely too early in the morning. Apparently the wake up call isn’t coming at 6:30 anymore. Now it is 6:20! I needed that extra 10 minutes! Grrr. Oh, well. Time for some more exploring of Galilee.

We started off the day with the Mount Of Beatitudes.  This was a really cool site where Jesus gave the Sermon On The Mount.  It is basically set up like an amphitheater with a nice slope down.  It was plenty big enough for 10’s of thousands of people to sit on and see Jesus.  Every time I have read this story, I have always wondered how the crap they had 20,000 people there and they could all hear Jesus’ voice.  Did someone have to stand about halfway down and keep yelling out everything He said?  Did Jesus just yell all the time?  Did He have a megaphone (you know the one with the CB microphone and a siren) that He slung over His shoulder?  Well, the way this place is set up is awesome.  There is a pretty constant breeze coming off of the Sea Off Galilee that they say could have easily carried His voice up the hill so that everyone could hear Him.  Sweet.  I still would have liked the megaphone personally.

Next up was the town of Capernum.  It is right on the edge of the Sea Of Galilee.  Jesus made this His base for ministry to the areas around Galilee.  Peter’s mother-in-law lived here too.  It is all ruins now, but you can see the black rock foundations and walls that date back to the first century.  The art work on all these structures is just amazing!

After finishing up our visit to Capernum we all loaded onto a boat and took a boat ride out into the middle of the Sea Of Galilee but stopped briefly at a church that is built on top of a rock that was used to anchor boats.  This was the place that Jesus cooked breakfast for the disciples after the resurrection.  The water of the Sea Of Galilee was pretty nice but by the time we got out into it the water turned to glass and there were no whitecaps what so ever.  It was incredible to stop out there and just think about Jesus and His disciples and listen to the noises around you!  Just think.  Jesus knew what was about to happen with the storm on the lake and yet He still sent the disciples out there into it.

Once our boat docked and we had some lunch we headed out to do some extreme sports!  Yeah that’s right.  It’s the cool thing to do too!  We drove up the Jordan River a good bit and did some kayaking down the river.  The wife and I got into the same inflatable kayaks and headed out.  Umm… did I tell you that our kayak came in first place in the race down.  They may not have known it was a race, but that’s their own fault!  We definitely had a blast!

Unfortunately our camera messed up at the end of Day 2 and so the pictures are on a different camera.  I promise I will get you some as soon as I can!  Oh, and don’t worry.  We figured it all out and it works fine now.

A woman in Tel Aviv, Israel, gave her elderly mother a new mattress as a surprise gift, throwing out the old tattered bed her mother had slept on for decades. The gesture ended up bankrupting Annat’s mother, who had stuffed her savings of nearly $1 million inside her old bed for decades, Annat told Israel Army Radio.

now, the real reason for the trip is revealed….give that lady back her matress!
