Movie Reviews – Terminator Salvation

Terminator Judgment Day

Finally!  We Terminator fans have been waiting for quite a while to see this flick!  I have been wondering for years who they would get to play John Connor once he was older than 21.  Now we have our answer.  For those of you that live far too sheltered lives and have never seen the Terminator movies, don’t start with this one!  There is way too much great stuff from the first three.  Go get the other three first and watch them, then go see Terminator Salvation.

Now that we have just lost Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles from our TV lives, Terminator Salvation comes at a perfect time!  We are all disappointed that our show has been…well…terminated and then BAM!  Have some John Connor fighting the machines!  This installment is set in 2018 well after Judgment Day and has Christian Bale, starring as John Connor, kicking plenty of metal.  He is the leader of the resistance against Skynet, the evil machines that have taken over the world.  He must find Kyle Reese, his father, and at the same time take down the Skynet headquarters.  Add Sam Worthington, Moon Bloodgood and Common into it and you got yourself a movie!

Now, being a Terminator fan I went in expecting awesomeness but was also prepared to be disappointed (just in case I let it get too hyped up in my head).  The old ones were so great that this one had a lot to live up to.  For me it did.  I liked the story.  I liked the special effects.  It wasn’t the best movie ever made (Transformers), but it was still a lot of fun.  There were lots of explosions and guns and fire!  That’s all good!  But I have to be as unbiased as possible here because there were somethings that were a little rough.  The camera was a little shaky for me.  I understand that kind of shot for running, but to add it to all the explosions and flashy stuff started giving me a little bit of a head ache.  The movie seemed to “borrow” a little too much from Transformers and Batman.  I was disappointed in that.  The Terminators themselves looked great!  Just like in the 80s but much better.  The problem was with the really big machines.  They looked and acted exactly like Transformers.  No, they don’t transform (would have been cooler…might be a bit biased), but they were way to close to exactly the same.  The snake machines were too much like Transformers, too.  The music…well I think it was the same score as Batman Begins and the Dark Knight.  My guess is that they forgot they needed music behind all the gunshots and explosions and just grabbed the soundtrack that Christian still listens to on his iPod as he rides his bike 120 mph down the 5.

So, don’t be discouraged.  It was worth it!  We loved the movie.  We will see it again (not for the insane price of $10.75 per ticket again).  They even threw in some scenes eerily similar to the first Terminator.  See if you can pick it out!  Go see it.  You might even get some answers to questions like will the humans win or will the Governator be in this one!
